Tickety's Tea Time Treats: Coffee Buns

I can’t quite remember exactly what my Pa said when I was innocently looking through one of my recipe books in the kitchen, but it was to the same effect as an ‘uh oh’, and a silent exclaim of ‘what on earth is she going to poison us with now?!!!’.
Well Pops I’ll tell you what I’m going to make- its Coffee bullets….. Ahem, I mean buns!

They are quite tasty- (perhaps a little sweet?) and are quick and easy to make.
I am unable to find a date on the ‘Woman and Home cookery book’, but the recipes still call for dried egg, tell of milk shortages and mention whale meat! So I would put it at wartime to the just post war years.

Because I am useless, and the fact that I baked them alooooong time ago (only now deciding to post!), I have totally forgotten what oven temperature I used and actually how long I baked them for- too long by the look of the picture! What can I say? Tupney and the kitchen just don't mix. (Well, I lie to a point as I can make a rather nice carrot soup and bake extremely yummy cheese straws!) Anyway, I would imagine it would have been at around 200°c in a modern fan oven, but if you decide to try these I would advise you to use your own better judgement on timings and temperature!

  1. These look really yummy and substantially filling, many thanks for the great vintage recipe. Though it probably wouldn't be keeping in the original vein of things, I'd be tempted to add in a handful of shredded coconut and perhaps a little dried mango or apricot, too.

    1. Haha, the “substantially filling” bit made me giggle- pray tell me what are you trying to say about my coffee buns!!! (haha) sums up my cooking attempts quite well, though I have found out on many an occasion that it’s not always a good thing! Your variations sound lovely :)

  3. I find old recipe books quite fascinating, although I have to say that they don't always work out terribly well! I will stick my neck out and say don't use a fan oven for baking, no matter how much you turn it down it's still too drying.

  4. I love a vintage recipe! I do find they always take a few goes to get right (although those coffee buns look fine to me! I bet they were lovely really!). Mary Berry advises that as flour has become more refined over the years, some older recipes may turn out differently to expected. Well that's my excuse anyway!

    1. I worry too much that’s my problem! I’m not confident enough and I worry that my cooking might harm someone (hehe)- I don’t care what will happen to me, but to inflict my cooking (disasters) onto someone else is just too much for me to handle! And to think, I wanted to be cooker (I meant chef!) when I was a nipper!
I think I will be adopting Mary Berry’s excuse from now on aswell!
