The “Mr Dior, you can keep your 'New Look'- yards cost coupons” Dress.

I say, remember me? It’s been another long blog vacation for me. My enthusiasm has been wavering and scoring very little on the “can’t be bothered- o - meter” (patent pending), and to be honest, I’ve struggled to think of anything to write about. I’m just one big bore!

Thankfully, Mammy dearest has helped out old grumpy knickers here L, by finishing off one of my ‘projects’ for me. So at least now I have something to show off… want to see? Obviously you have no choice in the matter as I’m going to show whether you shout “yes please” or “no ta”!

So what do you think? Okay, it’s not the most amazingly wonderful dress in the world, but personally I rather like the simplicity of it.

The pattern dates from 1947 and has been on my wish list to make for an absolute age. In fact, ever since I found it in a bundle of vintage patterns that once belonged to my grannie and great aunts. Unfortunately, the original pattern was too big for me, but when I came across it in a Tupney size (in other words, stick size) I positively pounced upon it!

The fabric was one I had stashed away- no idea where or when I bought it. I had originally saved it for my Birthday ‘dress’ suit (haha), though, I soon had second thoughts on the matter and chose this dress instead. Mammy cut out the pieces for me as I certainly can’t be trusted with matching up anything. Having said that, I did sew it together… just look at those beautiful chevrons!!!

  All teeth...

Oh fiddles, perhaps I didn't match them up very well after all... ah well, as my gran keeps on saying to me.."a blind man on a galloping horse would be glad to see it" or of similar phrasing. I think she said it was something her mother used to say... well, whatever is it was, it makes me chuckle! Anyway, this was a snap of the back. I'm glad to say that the front chevrons ARE perfect!

So a big "Ta Very much" goes to my mammy. For without her help I'd be near naked in these photos ... EEK, what a horrendous thought!
And on that rather worrying note I shall bid you goodbye
(my apologies for leaving you with such an image)

  1. Oh joy! I always look forward to your posts!
Your dress is so cute, even with the simplicity of it! And as far as Chevron matching goes... Well, I'm not such an expert at it either. :P
I've been inspired by your post about your camiknickers I think it was? Anyways, I've been on the lookout for a vintage "undies" pattern, and finally came across a late 1930's Brassiere and knickers pattern. So excited to try it out!

Your posts are so inspiring, and I must say that the lack of them makes them even more of a treat. ;)

  2. You just made my day! Not only do you look just like the pattern envelope (what a figure!), but I have never heard anyone else reference the "galloping horse" turn of phrase. My mother has always said it, and I think she got it from her grandmother. Her version is, "it'll never be noticed on a galloping horse." 'Course, they were all Texans. :-)

Love your dress...it's smashing on you! I think you did a wonderful job matching the chevrons too.

  5. Great, you look lovely! I can tell you that the pattern match is not to be sneezed at, it's a good job.
I am obsessive about things like that and the amount of times I have tutted my way through racks of ready made garements, some of them not exactly cheap either, over badly matched patterns has been numerous.

  6. That's a gorgeous dress, those stripes match up so perfectly.

What are the little birdies in one of the shots? Earrings? They're awfully pretty.

  7. Ooh, it's lovely! While it's not my colour, it's a fab design. I love dresses with this chevron-cut design, it's such a clever use of the fabric.

Also, I'm pretty sure those earrings are by the same maker as an orchid brooch I have (one of my favourites). The style is identical!

  8. Oh, my...
    The stitches match perfectly!
I could never (ever!) manage that.
The little birds in the second photo are adorable.
AS for the "a blind man on a galloping horse would be glad to see it".. this was my first meeting with that phrase. Every day I learn something new.

  10. Ooh, lovely dress - Simplicity works well with Summer dresses :) Not wanting to pester you (but I will if I must!), will there be a part 2 for your holiday posts? I'm pretty sure you promised us 3 posts... Or have I missed them? :)

  12. Worry not a speck, dear gal, the pattern lines up wonderfully - I've seen (and in some cases, owned) plenty of store bought garments whose patterns didn't match up one iota as well. Fabulous job to you and your (super talented) mom. This dress is such a classic gem!
