Decisions, Decisions….

Tupney calling, and she is greatly in need of some help from her fellow vintage lovers, and any experts that have experience in attending weddings!!
***
I have two weddings to attend this year, and if you ask me they are like buses! If my memory serves me correctly, which I sometimes doubt, then I have only ever been to two family weddings. One of those was when I was a tot (bridesmaid, Laura Ashley, need I say more?), and the other was in the more recent of years. So with very little experience of such an occasion I am starting to panic for more reasons than one.
Firstly, I'm not keen on large gatherings (or even small gatherings for that matter- family or not), I just don't feel comfortable, being a naturally reserved (I'm friendly enough!), retiring, and socially awkward (haha) person! And secondly, which is why I'm writing this, what on earth do I wear?

The first wedding is at the end of this month, and the second is at the end of September, so no rush eh! Well time is a ticking and I thought it best that I start having a little "what shall one wear" session!

I shall start with the outfits for the first of the weddings....
(Sorry the photo quality is rubbish- I didn't have enough energy to sort out the conservatory, and I couldn't go outside because it was/is raining!)

The first possibility, with a selection of belts, hats and shoes...

.

1940's navy dress,
30's or early 40's navy suede/leather shoes,
40's navy felt halo type hat.
Red satin cummerbund.

or
1940's two-tone suede belt, with a simple 40's black beret style hat

or
this!
Another change of belt ans shoes...

Maybe go without a hat? I'm not even sure how I'm going to do my hair yet- this is me four days into the set, and looking a little messy after trying on the me hats and glad rags...

A late 30's/40's turban hat is another possibility....
(Lovely hat, but it does make me look like a pixie.)

***

Outfit choice  no 2.

Mid to late 40's costume.
I love the peplum on this!
Again, I'm hat-less....

and how it looks with the same simple felt....

Outfit Choice no. 3.

Lastly this yellow, late 40's, crepe dress,
(I think it has shrunk in the wash, as I'm sure it was longer and bigger on the shoulders- I need to get this sorted)
teamed with the same Navy Halo hat and shoes seen in the top left photo...
Also I must find a belt, so I look like I have a waist!

I have been quite conservative with my selection of hats, just so I don't look too strange to the normal folk attending the wedding (I'm not sure they could handle a 40's tilt hat- must ease them in gently).
The only other worry I have is.... what  to wear over the top if it's chilly or stinky weather?
I s'pose I'll think of something nearer the deadline!!!

So Girls and Boys
what do you think?
(you can post on here or on me facebook page - that is, if you want to!)

Cheerio for now

  1. Totally voting for *drum beat*:

    1940's navy dress,
    30's or early 40's navy suede/leather shoes,
40's navy felt halo type hat.
    Red satin cummerbund.

    But, it all looks dashing!

  2. Hi,

    1. Ditto, Linsay Lane's choice, the red cummerbund absolutely lifts the look with a beautiful splash of colour.
    2. The same, but with red sandals
    3. Yellow dress, plus belt, black shoes and hat

I do hope you have a smashing time!

  3. Have to agree with Lindsay for wedding #1. If it was a social event for my own bit of fun, I'd match it with the red shoes, but so as not to take away from the bride, I'd limit the splash to the belt.

Since you have two weddings to go to, why limit it to one choice. I like the peplum dress with orange belt. With this one, I really like it without the hat. Maybe, if one of the weddings is in the evening, you save the hatless one for that?

Anyhow, you look stunning in all.

  4. first picture series ,right hand shot. The blue dress is a cracker but I think the first belt is too dominant.Either hat works though.

  5. I say the first outfit but the 3rd photo with the red esp for this months wedding. You can wear the same dress for the second wedding but instead with the accessories in photo 1 which is better for fall. The other dresses were too bright and not as formal. You look amazing btw and hope the rain has let up! xox

  9. Hi,

I say for the wedding in August the yellow dress because it's more summery, with a red belt, possibly the red sandals from choice number 2 and no hat it you're feeling informal. For the September wedding I like outfit number 2 version 3.As to over layers,I'm sure you must have a cute coat somewhere around that would work.Cheers.

  11. I here you completely when it comes to your feelings about large gatherings. I'm woefully shy and introverted and often feel out-of-place at such events, too. In terms of your outfit pic, I'm pulling towards the navy blue dress, though I might opt for a different belt (it's lovely, I just tend to personally steer away from bright hues at weddings for some reason) - maybe a cream or fawn hued one. I'm sure that whatever you wear, you'll look absolutely lovely.

  12. Going to a wedding is always fun and it's a special event where we can wear something different.
So my favorite choice is your first picture navy dress, red satin belt and I love this halo hat. What I love to wear for weddings is large hats they are sometimes hard to wear in the streets because of people stares but in wedding it's OK.
I also love this yellow dress, it will be perfect for a sunny afternoon!!!
So my advice is to choose your dress with the weather of the day!

  14. I'm with you on the social gathering awkwardness bit ! I have a wedding to go to in October and I'm already wondering what on earth to wear. I like the second version of the first outfit best, and then that lovely yellow dress. I've only recently discovered your blog and I really look forward to your posts :)

  17. I found your blog recently too - through The Fedora Lounge - just love it.
I like all your choices for the weddings so whichever you feel most comfortable in you will look great. A lot depends on the type of wedding - whether its formal or informal, day or evening (or spread between both), even if the bride has issued a 'will you wear' type request which I've seen at a couple of weddings recently.
Personally I love the first outfit but with the red shoes. Slightly more formal but still young and fun - and the hat is the more 'summery' of the two (the second hat more formal and sophisticated).
The peplum dress with the black hat and shoes is very elegant but with a 'fun' element too.
I love the yellow dress but personally would want to check out the type of wedding first before wearing that one. The same with whether to wear a hat or no hat - maybe if you prefer not to wear one you could take one with you just in case everyone else is doing?
Can you tell I've been to a 'few' weddings lately!! You have a lovely figure, gorgeous hair and a beautiful smile so you will look great regardless. Relax and enjoy.

  18. I really love the first outfit but the 3rd photo, with the navy dress, red belt and red sandals. If you wanted you could add a hat as either would look great! Hope all the comments help you decide

  19. Blue dress, red belt and shoes! I wouldn't go for a hat - could you do some sort of special up-do? x

  20. Mornin' me dear - Ma and I have deliberated and would like to vote for: The yellow dress, big red belt (from the first blue dress picture), red shoes and if you do go for a hat, the one in the last picture... Now, does the winning vote win something? :)

  21. urgh! Weddings! They fine as long as I can escape from them. I've hardly been to any so I find them rather annoying too. Really you could pick any combo of the first outfit and look great - I think the red shoes are a definite. Do you have a fur coat or stole? That would be perfect - with a brolly - for keeping you warm and dry.

  22. I am totally voting for the very first outfit :) Smart and pretty, retro but not too stand out :) And always a hat for a wedding :) If it's warm, you could always swap out the shoes for the red sandals :)

  23. I think you look great in them all but my favourites are the second of the navy blues, then the first. These combos look amazing on you, and definitely wear a hat. How about a little shoulder cape of some kind if you need something to wear over or if you own a short swing jacket. Whichever makes you feel the most relaxed and happy in will give you the most confidence at the end of the day.

  24. Navy dress, red belt and red shoes for me but with the hat from the first picture. I would wear the yellow dress with the red belt and shoes too.
