Cheese Pud.

As I sit here waiting for my cheese pud to come out of the oven (shivering with hunger I might add!), I thought I’d take the time to do a quick share of the recipe. It’s a great little lunch or supper dish, as it takes very little time to prepare. Well, having said that, you do have to leave it to soak for half an hour, before you bung it in the ole oven for forty!
This recipe was taken from a wartime Woman and Home cookery book, and has been tried and tested many a time by me….

Ingredients:-
3 thin slices of bread,
1 egg (shell or reconstituted),
½ pint of milk, (or milk and water),
2oz grated cheese,
¼ teaspoonful of made mustard,
Pepper and Salt.

Arrange the bread and cheese in alternate layers in a greased pie dish.

Beat the egg, add the mustard, salt, pepper and milk.

Pour over the bread and leave to soak for half an hour.

Cook in a slow oven for forty minutes.

Eat!

(Just a pic to show how it sinks a little!)

Grubs up!

  1. That looks tasty! I regularly do a cheese and potato pie, being the fussy vege that I am. Will definitely be given this one a go but without the powdered egg I think :o) Hope it was tasty x

  2. I used to make a dish just like this for my son when he was smaller, the recipe was in an Annabel Karmel book, the only difference being you spread the bread with marmite. Personally I hate the stuff but might be an interesting twist if you love it!

    1. Hmm, might give that a whirl. I’m not that keen on marmite- love the smell, not that taken with the taste- love it in gravy though!

I was wondering what it would be like if you left out the cheese and mustard, and spread the bread heavily with jam instead? Might make a nice stodgy sweet pud... then again, it might not!

  4. This looks delicious! I am confused, what is a slow oven? Is that on low? I am a consistant lurker, but had to pipe up for this. I love cheese, and this looks fabulous.

    1. Hullo! I make a slow oven to be around 130 celsius (the temp. I use).
The web address below has some handy conversions that may be of some use…

  5. Old recipes and the historical side of food really interests me, which is a bit strange as cooking has never been something I much enjoy, more of a chore that has to be done. I collect old cookery/household books by the dozen though!
