Pretties from Pickering!

 

Hello Folks!

Now, where to start? Blimey, what a time I’ve had of late! The Thursday before last saw the Tickety clan make their merry way (well, made our way…) up to, wait for it…. ‘The North’!!!

Our Destination: Pickering, North Yorkshire puddin’ land.

The Duration: 9 days.

Our Objective: have a holiday, rest, eat out lots, find lots of tat, time travel and be a ‘model’ (of sorts).

I won’t go into much detail of our holiday now, and will leave that for another post. Why ? I hear you cry! Well, I’m having a bit of trouble deciding how to write about the ‘1940’s event’ we also attended whilst up there. You see, I only have one decent picture to share from the whole three days that the wartime thingy took over…. I know, I’m useless… call me a blogger! So I might just forget about that aspect and show some of my other holiday snaps instead! :)

Anyroad, even if my holiday lacked photographic evidence, one thing it most certainly didn’t fall short on was vintage tat finding expeditions! Woohoo!

On the very first day I found a bounty of goodness, which would have kept me chipper even if I had not come across anything else that week! Oh the joys of knitting patterns and George Formby! ♥♥♥

 

Time to start the showing of the newly acquired tat, me thinks….

 

 

 Two Stitchcraft's and a super edition of Fancy Needlework (1930s)... fancy!

I already own the wartime Stitchcraft, but my original copy is a little on the tatty side. Plus it was such a good price I couldn't pass!

 

Eee, Mother! It's a George Formby songbook... found by my, well, mother!

I picked up the dish next to him- It's a rather nice pullover pattern in thick wools too!

 

The George Formby Songbook is grand- I adore all the little doodles of George in it. (If you are lucky, I'll do a separate blog about it). It also has one of my favourite GF Songs, 'It's in the air'.. hence the cover pic of George in a RAF uniform!

These airmail envelopes appealed to me too. Sadly they don't have the letters, though. :(

 

Now we move onto Friday's (and the rest of the week's)  purchases....

 

 

Mummy earned a zillion brownie points finding me these autographs! I L.O.V.E Harry Roy. I inwardly squeal with happiness each time I look at Harry's fine face... oh what a face. ♥

Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, in total I now own 4 autographs- Two of dearest Harry ♥♥

One of Henry Hall ♥ (who I also rather like, but he only gets one heart at the moment! Plus, I'm not called Keith Foster!) and

one of Harry Leader.

PATTERNS... We found some sewing patterns!

 

Oh what useful patterns these will be! I have so many occasions where I need to wear a dance frock or bridesmaid dress....Still, I really fancy making these two dresses up sometime. I'm thinking about shortening them to make them more wearable or just make the top half as a blouse?

 

 

I don't need the Maternity pattern either, but I do like a nice smock! The Jacket is a lovely pattern too- it has a half-belt at the back.♥

 

 

Another Needlewoman to tick off the list! And two more pretty jumpers for the collection...

 

One for the 'To knit' list me thinks....

 

 

KNICKERS! I'll show them off properly at some point, but until then...

 the yellow pair are Utility and look like fairy knickers (win), and the blue pair are bloomers (win). Both fit perfectly too!

 

 

Some odds and ends...

 

I have a thing for darning outfits- there's something  really appealing about the colours of old silks and threads, and the fact that they represent the dying art of mending hosiery... I love them!

And last, but by no means least, a lovely new chap. I'm rather fond of hand coloured photos, so I couldn't leave him in the shop. I thought he was quite unusual in the fact he's sporting a few tattoos. Both Ma and I are now wondering if he has any more! Notice how nicely he tones in with my new knickers too... it's like he was meant to be! (Don't worry, I don't always choose my men this way!)

I haven't named this chap yet- I'm going to take him out of his fame and see if there's anything written on the back first... I'll keep you posted!

Duster in Disguise



Yet again I’ve gone AWOL from my bloggin' duties. It really is not on and I shall give myself a firm slap on the wrist (and maybe one on the behind too, though I may need assistance for the latter) to try and correct my wayward ways!

Anyway, to bridge the gap, two whole weeks worth, I thought I would bring forth another of mammy's makes....and what a make it is! I’m so excited by it (giddy as a kipper in fact) that I couldn’t wait any longer to show it off. I know, I know, it should be another R.A.F. Friday, but as I haven’t done a post since the last one, I thought I better do something more varied…. After all, I don’t want my blog to be all R.A.F. Fridays and no knickers….In other words, I don’t want it to be All “R.A.F. F” and nothing else!

So, what did dearest mammy make here littlest? Why, a swimsuit out of dusters of course!
She really does spoil me, you know. It’s is utterly fantabulous and very, very yellow! I’m such a lucky girl.

 Enough chatter from me, me thinks.- here’s my duster cossie…..

The idea came from a British magazine dated 1944 and great for the girls with few coupons left!

 

" A brilliant idea, sun-suit from bright yellow dusters!

Will go in the water too."

 A pic of the original- glad to see it's baggy on the glamorous mannequin too!

 

"Four yellow dusters of the best quality; one pair of coloured silk shoe laces; one card of yellow bias binding; one reel elastic thread; four yards cord elastic; one reel matching silk. (total cost about 7s. 6d.)"

 

The front…. Rather voluminous aren’t they. Not sure how it will fare in water!!! Luckily, we know that these are colourfast dusters (phew!)- only the best and all that....

The shirring continues around the back, where it laces up with a shoe lace... classy! (not a silk shoelace like the magazine suggests though)

The adjustable straps are crossed over and fastened with buttons on the inside.

 

(I look like a giant in the next snap- I'm only 5'6 and a bit... honest!)

 

 

 

All in all, this suit is the perfect cossie to wear when dusting, to do a duster dance in (as you do), and....

I actually put it in a wartime fashion display a couple of weeks back (pictures to come) and quite a few people said they liked it- some of the older gals thought it was glamorous! (< those gals have great taste)

  Seeing as we are no longer rationed, and don't need to use un-rationed goods to make bathing suits, I'm hoping Ma will make me another one in a pretty print. Hmm, shall I use my precious leopard print fabric???

 

Well, I think it's time to do a bit of spring cleaning. Better slip into something more practical, and start shimmying around anything that looks dusty....

Red Lace and Dots.

 

Well, in my absence from the blogsphere  (have you missed me.. actually don’t answer that) I have been getting on with a few finishing off projects. It’s very unlike me to finish anything off properly, so to finally pull my socks up and have something to show you is absolutely marvellous! I shall put my new found enthusiasm to get things finished down to the changing seasons!

Now, I can’t quite remember when I started these early 50’scami-knickers, but lets just say it was last summer!. Rather a long time to make a simple pair of undies isn’t it! The annoying thing is that they actually didn’t take me too long to make and as usual it was the finishing off bits (straps, poppers, tying in ends….) that put me right off them! I think it took me a couple of months to muster the correct amount of enthusiasm and patience to sew on 3 whole press studs (I hate them!), and only last week did I sew on the straps after I had found the knickers hanging on the back of my bedroom door!

 

 So without further ado let me show you all me new cami-knicks!

Originally I was just going to take photo's of the undies on Miss Busty here, but every full length photo I took looked awful on her ( I didn't think that would be possible, but nethertheless it's true- the undies just didn't hang correctly on her!), so I gave in and modelled them instead (Oh the shame)... I don't know, the things I do to keep this blog ticking over! :(

It’s very rare for me to start any sewing related project without Mammys input, but with this project I had it all pinned and cut out before mum had returned home from work-I’m pretty sure I had even started to sew it together as well!

The pattern went together relatively smoothly- I had a little bother with the lace and the bodice though, which is where I consulted the oracle. Firstly, I had started the project without actually having any suitable lace and then I needed help with putting on the lace!

 

The back- and me being nosey and sticking my behind out- what class!

 



All in all I’m very happy with the outcome...mind you, I’m not sure if I would make the pattern again without ringing some changes first. Personally I think the back of the bodice to be overly fussy-

 It took 6 pieces to make the bodice (Yes, SIX pieces) and was a bit of a faff to piece together. I like the front, just not keen on the back! I think you could get away with a narrow band edged with lace at the back instead....?

 Well, I suppose that's it for now.... must get on and mend a celanese type slip and sew togther my crocheted cami-knickers.... perhaps finish my slip and knickers set too (yes, it's all about underwear at the moment!).

Just like Christmas

Christmas may only be a few days away, but yesterday it came early for me when I was given a whole load of goodies from my fairy Godmother of vintage (aka, Clare from Second Hand Rose).
Just look at it all....

First up is a bundle of sewing and knitting patterns....

A bounty of booklets and leaflets to dress the kiddies in...

My favourite of these has to be the romper suit- how cute and what an amazing curly top he has!

 

 

Probably the best knitting pattern of all. I adore pigs and I'm going to knit him as soon as I find 2oz of 3ply in pink.....

 

Yay patterns for adults too! Some super patterns for warm undies- can't decide which one I like the most.

The mannequin in the top left is one of my favourite models of the day- to me she is perfect. I would love to know who she is....

 

And to the sewing patterns

 

Again, some very lovely patterns for the kidlettes.

How cute are the rompers ( I must have a thing for rompers!) and the little outdoor set...

 

And last but by no means least...

 

 

 ...some patterns that Tupney can wear (Hurrah!). I can't wait to get started on the 1947 teenage dress (bottom left)- Will be a lovely style for the summer, don't you think?

 

And if that wasn't enough (I know, how lucky am I), I was also given number of old packaging too.

This does mean though, that I now have to reorganise my display cabinets (oh what a hardship!!!), as I hate having all this stuff and not being able to see it all....

 

 

I think this gal looks a bit like Anna Friel.... or is it just me (probably).

I shall be using this, but won't be looking anywhere near as glamorous in it, I'm sure!

 

I love old packaging- Tarso- pads for Callouses and all...

 

 Lovely is the Lipstick blotting paper packet... notice I'm not asking is you agree, I'm telling you it is!

 

And how cool is this- A Wartime quality pack of cookery parchment!

Got to love a bit of wartime packaging- I'm lucky enough to own a few bits, so this is a most lovely addition. I don't know about anyone else, but I never look that serene when I cook!

(Might come in handy if I ever rival the Wartime Farm team- I doubt it, but you never know!)

I'm planning on archiving my collection for real next year, so expect to see a bit of the packaging that I have collected of the years on this olde blog! Though I can't quite decide if I should set up another blog just for that sort of stuff or not? I can barely keep this one up, so perhaps I shouldn't... hmm, we shall see.

Oh I bet you can hardly wait... well I certainly can, because it's not going to be easy- must be done though ;)
