R.A.F Friday Christmas Special.

 

Welcome one and all to a very special edition of R.A.F Friday. Ok, so the only reason it's special is because it's the last one before Christmas and I have raided my room to dig out all the Christmassy related items especially!
I must confess that I wasn't planning to show what is about to be shown- I was adamant that the thing I was going to show was connected to a particular RAF chappy, but my brain played a cruel trick on me and I got all mixed up with a similar thing that was sent to a chappy in the RAF, and needless to say, I didn't buy the latter (was expensive!). However, I shall try and upload the thing I wanted to share nearer Chrimbo, because it is rather interesting RAF related or not!


So to me stuff....

First up, a couple of Christmas cards...

 

 I bought these back in the summer (along with the bundle below)

And the Transport Command CC is dated 1945 inside.

I'm not sure if this is Willie, (sort of looks like him) but he came with the rest and I would hate for him to go unnoticed!

(Nice to see a WAAF for a change!)

(use to love to sing it at school when I was diddy dot!).

is my latest purchase....

 

 

I bought this chappy in London (fancy). I've had to crop him a bit as it's a fairly large portrait- not huge, huge just too large for the scanner! I don't know about anyone else, but I adore tinted photos, and I think the seller could tell that I had fallen in love with him when I enquired after the price! I don't know what I would have done if she hadasked for more than I could have given her- well, one thing I do know, I would have been very miserable if he was to be too much dosh for little Cinders here!

Anyway, he resides with me now, and I have named him Bert as I think it suits his kind face. : P

(what a nutcase eh!)

Well, that's all I could muster for this edition, as I can't think of anything else Christmas related... s'pose the last one isn't at all related to Christmas, but hey, I couldn't wait another week without showing him off!

R.A.F. March Past.

I must apologise for my absence and for the lack of any interest on this dusty blog of mine..sorry!

I have very little to show and tell (that's a lie, just haven't the energy)..the house is full, so I can't take any photo's of my vintage finery, but to be honest I haven't felt like doing it any way, and well, I'm just a grump, which needs no explaining!  I really am in a rut that I can't seem to get out of- just too much on my mind, that's all.

One thing I always have time for is music, so lets start to get things back on track with a tip top tune, eh!

 

Today's tip top tune will hopefully get you all in the mood for tomorrows R.A.F Friday (try not to yawn so loudly!!!), which also need sorting out :(

What a cracking illustration, would have been far better if a Hurricane was shown too, but I suppose it's too late to complain now!

Nevertheless its still most treasured...

 

 

And to the tune...

 

 

I know this sort of music isn't to everyone’s taste, but I've grown up with such tunes, so naturally feel a great fondness towards them and I hope after hearing it you will too... if not.... then clear off.... hehe, not really. I'm only pulling your leg. As if I'd be so rude!

One of my favourite airforcy type tunes is the Dam Busters March...

(got to love a Wurlitzer!)

 

I'd quite fancy waltzing around an airfield to this ... obviously it would have to be an abandoned one, as I don't want people to think I'm mad- got to keep up appearances and all that. Mind you, I'm not sure how to dance to the more dramatic bits (don't have a clue why I'm worrying- don't have the bottle!)

I also have it on a 78 (can't remember which band), so I just need to fish it out and grab my gramophone, find an airfield and learn to dance... I s'pose I need find a willing chap too, but I can prance around on my own, so I'm not too bothered if I don't.

 

Any roads, on that slightly worrying note, what about this version? It's a bit dodgy at the end, but it's still cracking!

 

I so want someone to serenade me on the ukulele with this- how cool.... One can only dream!

Last week I promised that I would do an Al Bowlly tune. Well it was looking a little iffy at first, as I knew for certain that I had no sheet music featuring Al on the cover. At this point I was entering panic mode, thinking that my collection was Bowlly-less! But fear not, dear chums, for I went to another place in the TBT collections room (aka bedroom) where I keep the rather large sheet music, and sure enough (thank heavens) I found a piece that he did sing!

Come to think of it, I don’t think I have ever come across a sheet with his picture on. I’m guessing, though I might be wrong, that this may be because he was just a singer in a band. On the whole, the band leaders were the main attraction and the singers played second fiddle (other instruments are available), therefore the band leaders were the guys featured on the sheet. Of course this doesn’t mean the singers went totally unnoticed!

Quite strange really, but today more people are likely to know who Al is (well I hope that they do) and would probably say…. “Ray Noble?....Lew Stone who?.... Roy Fox?... Never heard of them” and then look at me in great puzzlement. (I know, people already give me puzzling looks!)

I'm afraid that because it was too big for my scanner I had to stitch it, hence the bowed look! (silly stitching programme)

She is lovely though, and its no wonder that the fella fell in love with her on the Isle of Capri...

This Tip Top tune is one of the most recent to be added to the TicketyBoo collection.

I was initially attracted by the cracking graphics, and decided to buy it without even knowing the tune! I’m glad I bought it though, as it’s extremely pretty.

Let me know what you think, as my opinions on music can differ greatly from those of you who are more normal! ; )

Leicester Square Rag Song

I can't begin tell you how much I love Harry Roy and his band, but lets just say I like them quite a bit!

This tune isn't my favourite of his, though don't get me wrong it is indeedy still a corker! No, my favourite song is still to be found in sheet form- I have Billy Cotton’s version, but not Harry boys.... I’m not going to tell you what it is; otherwise you will know what will be coming in next week’s edition! I’ve got to maintain some suspense to this here blog.

For some unknown reason I have two versions of this tune in sheet music and both featuring Harry Roy- I'm not complaining or nothing, but it is a little queer that I would buy another! All I can think is, either I had a memory lapse or it must be a subconscious thing.... Harry Roy = MUST BUY!

Quite a jolly old song isn't it!

In my opinion I think this tune would be a good’un to dance to… ok so I can’t dance myself (where's Victor Sylvester when you need him eh?), but I can see the potential for a bit of rug cutting nonetheless!

This weeks tip top tunes is in memory of the ever so beautiful Ann Rutherford, who sadly passed away on June 11th.

I have chosen two great tunes from the film Orchestra Wives, in which Ann starred along side George Montgomery (Carole Landis, Cesar Romero and the wooden top, Glenn Miller and his band also feature!).
 The film is great fun, but I do think George's character is a real stinker and he most certainly doesn't deserve our lovely Ann! Well actually, I'm pretty sure I wasn't taken by George, though I could be mistaken as it's quite a long time since I last watched the film..... Now if that isn't a worthy excuse get out the dvd, then I don't know what is?

Any roads up, here are the sheet music and tunes to match....

I think this song is grand, but is the sort of tune that gets stuck in your mind!

This clip has been taken form the film and also showcases the A.M.A.Z.I.N.G Nicholas Brothers- my can those fellas dance…. You most certainly wouldn’t want anything to go wrong with their dance routines….. ouch! Oh and wont you just look at the cracking Miss Marion Hutton- how cool is she!

All Over The Place

Ah, this weeks Tip Top Tune is one my all time favourite tunes. We won’t acknowledge the fact that my list of favourite tunes is rather long, but nevertheless I just loves it, I do!!! I also have this tune on a 78, which is very prized indeed.

From the 1940 film ‘Sailors Three’, which also stars the lovely Michael Wilding and Claude Hulbert. Tommy Trinder and chums (the three sailors- hence the title) find themselves on board an enemy ship, which, unsurprisingly, leads to disastrous consequences and hilarious turnabouts (well, at any rate they make me chuckle!). Of course, they are victorious in the end, with Tommy also getting the girl- even though they only met the day before! Ah well, it’s nothing you wouldn’t expect to happen in a wartime British comedy- all very patriotic!

This is actually one of the few Trinder films that doesn't make me depressed- you put me in front of the gogglie box to watch 'Foreman went to France' and 'The bells go down' and there will be tears!

Anyway enough of my babble, here’s the tune, or should I say........ wait for it!

Isn't it one of the most joyous tunes you have ever heard (say yes or I'll give you a bop on the old noggin!)?

Seeing this clip makes me want to get out the DVD boxset again...

Bell- Bottom George.

This weeks sheet music is actually from the very first George Formby film I ever saw. Of course it goes with out saying that I became an even bigger fan after watching it! I now have the dvd box sets!!!!

In this clip our George has been asked to sing a song on behalf of his ships company for their BBC radio performance....

I think you can watch the film in it's entirety on the tube, if you so wish! But I hold no responsibility if you are bored by the end or even after the rather lovely overture- I am quite aware that he's like Marmite and not to every ones taste.. Bless him!

If you do watch it, or have seen the film, then look out for the most perfect fox terrier EVER.

What could be better for a hat fancier like myself, than a dog that pinches hats... huh?

Henry Hall:- "Radio Times"

Tickety’s Tip Top Tunes!

It was meant to be ‘Teddy Winnerton’s Tip Top Tunes’, but I’m afraid he is off touring all the dance halls with the Horlicks Mixers, so as result, is unable to do any guest posts. By the way, none of that will make any sense, so let’s just say that I had a dream where I went to see a dance band call ‘Teddy Winnerton and the Horlicks Mixers’! The Horlicks Mixers were actually rather good, and their band leader was quite a catch too- I suppose he looked a bit like a dark haired version of Henry Hall.... Oh, and he had horn-rimmed specs and all. Actually come to think of it, Henry Hall did have dark hair (didn't he?)…Funny how in my dream he looked like another band leader isn’t it. Gosh, I have no imagination!!!

Anyway, because I have a lot of sheet music in a pile, all unread (I’m not musically gifted in any way), I thought I would scan in the covers and look up the tunes to go with them on the ‘Tube’ for all to see. When I pick up sheet music I always look for songs that mean something to me or images that are pleasing to the eye…. This means I have A LOT of the stuff as I like a wide variety of music and most sheet covers are nicely illustrated! So far I have scanned in about half my collection, which are all the ones small enough to fit in the scanner, unfortunately the rest are whoppers and I’m dreading scanning them in two sections- what a palaver that will be eh!

 So to kick it off  here is Radio Times by Henry Hall (or is it Mr. Winnerton?) from 1934.
